Here's what we offer, and what you'll pay. Refreshingly direct, isn't it?

Comprehensive Financial Planning

By "comprehensive", we mean a plan that covers the following, as appropriate:

  • Retirement planning

  • College savings

  • Employee benefits optimization, including employer stock benefits

  • Insurance, including health, life, disability, and long-term care

  • Investment analysis

  • Risk management and risk/reward analysis

  • Cash flow management

  • Debt and credit management

  • Tax planning

  • Estate planning

  • General financial goals, including Monte Carlo statistical analysis

Of course, this isn't a one-time plan set in stone -- it's a continual work in progress, as your financial life is in a constant state of flux. Salary, benefits, expenses, assets, debts, tax law, age, family status, investments, investment theory, and many more things all combine to create an ever-changing landscape. That's why we'll be meeting twice a year to review and revise your plan, and you'll have e-mail and phone access to us at any time in between. You might think of it as periodic course correction on your journey through uncharted financial waters.

Moreover, you'll have unlimited access to your Seaborn Financial Hub, which includes detailed information and analysis on your financial assets, progress towards your goals, spending analysis (if you like), an organizer for your financial information, and a vault to store financial documents and reports that we create for you. And yes, it's secure, using 256-bit encryption, two-factor authentication, and regular whitehat security testing. (We're former engineers. We get it.)

Pricing is as follows:

  • Initial charge for single clients: $3000 up front, or $300/month for 12 months

  • Initial charge for partnered clients: $3600 up front, or $360/month for 12 months

  • Ongoing charge: $195/month, starting after initial plan presentation

I've designed my planning from the ground up to put money back in your pocket, but I know talk is cheap. That's why we have a 90-day guarantee; if by 90 days (about how long it takes to create the initial plan) you're not happy with the value you're getting, you can walk and get every dime back.

Investment Management

Comprehensive financial planning includes investment analysis and recommendations, but we don't have to stop there.

In addition to the standard risk/reward assessment used to create a systematic portfolio allocation across all of your investment accounts, investment management improves your return on investment via the following:

  • A customized portfolio (and we do mean "customized" -- see "client-driven investing" below) that efficiently optimizes the tradeoff between volatility and returns

  • Portfolio implementation via such money managers as Dimensional Fund Advisors, a top-performing, research-based investment manager only available to institutional, long-term investors

  • Opportunistic rebalancing -- "volatility harvesting" -- keeping your risk levels where you want them and improving returns by "buying low and selling high"

  • Tax-loss harvesting, improving returns on taxable accounts by deferring taxes

  • Tax-efficient asset location, improving returns by locating asset classes in the most optimized way between traditional, Roth, and taxable accounts

What's the client-driven investing item mentioned above? Effectively, it comes from our belief that investment management isn't about the client handing over the proverbial keys to their financial advisor. (We'll say it again: we're former engineers. What engineer wants to relinquish control of, well, anything?) Rather, every step should be collaborative:

  • The asset allocation (split between stock, bonds, and other asset classes) will drive the majority of returns -- and volatility. Therefore, our clients have a major hand in determining that allocation, and we deeply explore the tradeoffs before they make that decision.

  • Once the allocation has been determined, we then determine whether to invest in the lowest-cost funds available, or to use slightly higher-cost money managers if we believe that increases the chance of outperformance. It's your money -- the choice should be yours!

  • Another layer is "Socially Responsible Investing", where we tilt our portfolios towards companies that are a proven force for social good (while maintaining the overall asset allocation). Clients who wish to engage in impact investing are given this option.

  • Finally, once an allocation has been determined, clients sometimes want to reserve a portion of their portfolio for speculation on particular companies or technologies which they believe will outperform the market. That's fine! We'll set up a systematic way to integrate "your" part with "ours".

Our annual fee starts at 0.6% of assets under management for accounts under $1MM and decreases beyond that. We have a $150,000 minimum of assets managed, unless you are also engaging in Comprehensive Financial Planning, in which case the minimum is waived.

Hourly Projects: Expert Advice A La Carte

What if you just want a specific question answered, or a specific analysis done? We can do that, too! With Hourly Projects, we charge an hourly rate to offer whatever financial expertise you require. Some examples include:

AMA (Ask Me Anything) (formerly Office Hours): Like it says, we can set aside 60-90 minutes for a Q&A. I'll tailor my answers based on your specific situation, and if you run out of questions, I'll walk through my list of "things you might not know to ask about".

Financial audit: We can go through current your financial plan, and I'll offer suggestions on optimizations, running any analysis and number-crunching needed.

Retirement plan/Monte Carlo simulations: I can run retirement projections, including Monte Carlo simulations, in order to determine if you're on track for retirement. I can also run analysis on Social Security, Roth conversion, and other potential optimizations.

Investment Review/recommendation: I can go over your current investment strategy and determine how it might be optimized, including specific fund or ETF recommendations.

Employer stock analysis: Trying to figure out the best way to handle your RSU's or ESPP's? I can help you look at the tax and risk ramifications, and determine an optimal strategy.

My rate is $200/hour, billed monthly in arrears, in 15-minute increments. (Pro bono scholarships are available; contact us for details.)
